“DAMNED LOAFERS.”

DISCUSSION ON UNEMPLOYED.

Wanganui, 18th January.

An animated discussion on unemployment took place at a meeting of the Wanganui Hospital Board to-day. The Mayor (Mr. J. W. Rogers) suggested that tho board should increase the rations allowed to people in distress. Mr. W. Ritchie maintained that there were certainly genuine cases, but the way they were conducted was pure encouragement to “damned loafers.” “There is plenty of work in the country,” he said. “Excuse me swearing, but that’s what a lot of them are. He maintained that the public was encouraging loafing by subscribing to relief' funds. People should encourage self-reliance, he said. Mr. Rogers: “I object to the term ‘damned loafers,’ and the kindest thing I can wish Mr. Ritchie is tp have a family of five children, and have to go out looking for work day in and day out. It is easy to philosophise when your stomach is full, and your bank book is full. I object to men being called ‘damned loafers’ who are contributing to the wealth of the country by buying the farmers’ produce.” Mr. Ritchie is a farmer of long residence in the district.
