KOPUTAROA-FOXTON ROAD.
THE CASE FOR A SUBSIDIARY HIGHWAY.
PROPOSAL REJECTED BY COUNTY COUNCIL.
“What about the Shannon-Fox-tou road?” asked Cr. Ryder, when the question of subsidiary highways was under discussion at the Horowhenua County Council meeting on Saturday. The chairman stated that it was already a Main Highway J The Ko-putaroa-Foxton road had been mentioned to him, but it was not leading directly on to the main road. Or. Kilsby pointed out that the road from Koputaroa to Foxton carried a considerable amount of traffic. Five or six years ago the traffic on the Levin-Foxton route was very light compared with what it was to-day. There was quite sufficient traffic to make it a subsidiary highway in comparison with any of the other roads to be submitted. It was a difficult road to maintain, the cost being far greater than that of any road in the southern end of the County. There was quite a large amount of traffic from the Foxton end, on the Koputaroa road, besides traffic from the Soldiers’ (Settlement. Seeing that the maintenance was fairly expensive, the 'Council should endeavour to have that road included among the subsidiary highways.
The chairman said it was not tho question of the maintenance of a road that affected the Highways Board. One road might be expensive to maintain because it was a long way from the source of metal. The question of importance to the Highways Board was the use of a road by the travelling public.
The chairman said that in view of the fact that the Council could at any time ask for any road to he made a subsidiary highway, and in view of the position of the main roading, they should limit the declaration to the roads which lie suggested —Waihoanga-Te Horo Rail-' way, Waikanae-Waimeha Township, and Leviu-Hokio. If Cr. Kilsby wished, at a later date, other roads could be submitted from time to lime.
Cr. Kilsby: Foxton to Koputaroa is one of the most important roads in the county. He moved that it be added to the list suggested by the chairman, and this Avas seconded by Cr. MeLeavcy. Put as an amendment to the chairman’s motion dealing with the above roads, this Avas defeated, only the mover and the seconder voting for it.
