AT THE SEASIDE.

RECORD CROWfDS DURING HOLIDAYS. The record crowds at the local seaside during the holidays testified to the grooving popularity of the resort. The weather during the Christmas and New Year period was ideal and the ocean beach and river /foreshore presented an animated scene.* Numbers of people crossed the river and strolled along the southern beach and many walked as far as the Hydrabad wreck.

In the, shelter of. the sand dunes groups or people indulged' in suii baths and the backs.of quite a number presented the appearance of boiled lobster and the effects were subsequently painful.' The bathing shelters were much appreciated. Although there were a few venturesome bathers very few went beyond the safety-limit in the breakers, and there were no accidents to mar the enjoyment. The Beach Improvement Committee, and seaside residents co-operated in 'their endeavour to add to the enjoyment of visitors.' The artesian well provided by the Harbour Board, gave an ample supply of fresh water. The' Committee enlarged the temnis courts ami these were occupied from,,,early morning until the light faded. Within the hall impromptu concerts and dancing were indulged in at intervals. All the houses were occupied and awnings over ears and tents in sheltered spots provided sleeping accommodation for numbers of visitors. Hundreds of visitors from Palmerston and beyond, visited the seaside daily and the Beach road was never empty of traffic. Several fishing parties ventured over, the bar for deep sea fishing and amateur fishermen plied drag nets for flounders along the river front. A merry-go-round was well, patronised by young and old and the kiddies, kept the swings moving. -, - ANNUAL SPORTS MEETING. On New Year’s IJpy the annual sports meeting arranged by the Beach Committee was held and the various events were''watched with interest by about 200.0 spectators.
