CONSTABLE CHARGED WITH FORGERY AND THEFT.
Gisborne, December 12. Allegations of forgery and theft of Government moneys were preferred at Tolaga Bay Magistrate’s Court to-day against James Blakely, formerly a constable in charge of the Tolaga Bay district. The case was heard before Justices of the Peace. Blakely was charged with being a Government servant, stealing sums of money totalling £l2 35., and also with altering entries in a criminal record hook in respect of fines from £5 to £3 10s, £5 to £3, and £5 to £2. Amongst the witnesses were Mr. Levvy, S.M., who gave evidence that it appeared to him that the amounts of the fines in the record book had been altered and other figures substituted, the amounts in the book not being in his handwriting. Blakely was at that time clerk of ■Court at Tolaga Bay. , After further evidence, accused pleaded not«guilty and was committed to the Supreme Court for trial.
