On one occasion American tourists arrived at Invercargill with snow shoes, included in their luggage. No bankruptcies were recorded in Oamaru during November, and so far this year there have been only five. . The aggregate attendance at the motion picture theatres during the past year in Australia and New Zealand was approximately 80,000,000. The unusual sight of a turkey mothering eight young ducklings, ,was seen recently on a North Taranaki farm. 'Only a little more than l£in. of rain fell in Auckland during November, a figure which is considerably below the average, 3.20 in. . A forgotten treasure was found at the Auckland Public Library, a wash drawing by William Blake was among the Grey collection. It is entitled, “Lot and His Daughter’s,” and is valuable.
Promising developments in connection with the Pieton coalfield have been made recently. A party working at Shakespeare Bay have struck a good seam of bituminous coal, stated to be 30ft. thick. Residents of the Oxford district in Canterbury recently held an “egg day” on behalf of the local hospital (says the Christchurch Press), and as a result 71 dozen eggs were contributed, and have been put down for use in the winter.
Visitors to Taupo report that the road from Napier, is in splendid condition for motoring. “I have been over the road each year for many years past,” said a Napier resident last week, “and I have never seen it in such good condition.”
Nineteen medical and accident cases were dealt with by the Wellington free ambulance on Saturday, states a Press Association message. This was the geratest number of calls in the service for any one day since its inception a few weeks ago.
A report in circulation stated that Frederick Mouat, sentenced to a-long term of imprisonment for the manslaughter of his wife, had died in prison. But Mouat, actually, is ali'vc and enjoys very good health.
A well-known Rangitikei farmer, whose name was suppressed, was fined £2O and prohibited from taking intoxicating liquor, when he appeared in the Mart-on Magistrate s Court on Saturday on a charge of driving a car while drunk. The police asked for the cancellation of his license, but this was refused. It was stated that accused had been previously warned.
