Manawatu Hearald. TUESDAY, DECEMBER 6, 1927. LOCAL AND GENERAL

A social and dance will be held in the Maori Meeting’ House, Motuiti, on Thursday, December Bth, at 8 p.m. There was an extraordinary occurrence in the Rangitikei senior cricket competition at Marton on Saturday afternoon. Marton dismissed Junction for only one run. Bowling, Biss took six wickets for one run, and Broad four for none. Only ten overs were bowled. On Thursday evening a series of races will be held in the local -baths. Entry is free to Club members, and nominations for all events close with the secretary (Mr D. R. Barron) and the caretaker of the baths (Mr S. Dudson) to-morrow evening, at 8 o’clock. The garden party, to have been held under the auspices of the Presbyterian Ladies’ Social Guild, on Thursday afternoon at the residence of Mrs. John Ross, has been abandoned owing to unforseen circumstances. We are asked to state, however, that the guild afternoon will be held at Mrs. Ross’s ,on Thursday.

Hampers will be available at Francton Junction and Marton for railway travellers from next Monday. Orders may be given to train guards or at jany railway station, and upon the arrival of the train at these stations the hampers will be ready. For three shillings cold meats, salads and fruit will be packed, with aerated waters or tea, coffee or cocoa in thermos flasks. A deposit of , 10/- will have to be paid, this sum being returned at any station into which the hamper is handed.

For several years past the local business people combined to entertain the children of the town and district on the afternoon of Christmas eve, when Santa Claus made his appearance and distributed toys, etc. The Mayor is taking steps to raise a fund to carry out the ceremony again this year, and will be pleased to receive any donations in cash or gifts of sweets or toys. Gifts may be left at this office or with Mrs. Pearson, at her residence, Clyde Street. The Mayor is arranging for a committee to carry out the details. Scene: Smoker of city tram-car. Stern-faced, anti-tobaccoite, addressing stranger opposite putting a hug." pipe with evident enjoyment. you know, my friend, there’s enough poison in that pipe of yours io kill a field-mouse or 37 bluebottle flics?” The smoker: “That so? Well if ever I see a field-mouse smo’. lug a pipe I’ll tell the cat.” .Joking apart, there’s a lot of nonsense talked and written about ~moking. So long as the tobacco is pure and as free from nicotine as possible it can’t do much harm. Cut there’s the rub. Those imported tobaccos just reek with nicotine. That’s why their habitual use is so injurious. Our own New Zealand tobaccos, on the other hand, are almost free from nicotine, so that you can indulge in them to your heart’s content with perfect safety. Also owing to the toasting of the leaf, their iiavour is simply delicious and their fragrance delightful, purer or choicer brands money cannot buy. Ask for “Riverhead Gold’’ mild, “Navy Cut” (Bulldog) medium, or “Cut Plug No. 10” (Bullshead) full.
