RETURNED SOLDIERS’ DAY.

The Returned Soldiers’ •Committee enlivened Main Street on Saturday afternoon and evening, when they held a successful shop day and from the decks of two gaily decorated lorries a minstrel troup enenterfained the public. Prior to the entertainment the lorries paraded Main Street. Above the cab of the

first lorry a quick-firer was mounted and camouflaged with greenery, and the firing of crackers gave the outfit' a realistic effect. The gun was in change of a fully-equipped “digger” (Mr. A. E. Scott). “Old Bill” (Mr. \Y. Byne), a splendid replica of Bainsfather’s character, Guardsman (Mr. R. McMurray), Gordon Highlander (Mr. j Howe), War Prisoner (Mr. H. Reid), Padre (Mr. Heyes), Jack Tar (Mr. D. Gilbert), Red Cross nurse (Mr. D. R. Barron), tramp (Mr. H. Hutchins), preceded the procession. On the lorries were eighteen young ladies dressed as pirates, Esquimaux, jockeys, Indians, Maori Pieriots and two gaudily dressed nigger minstrels, Messrs H. Hornblow and W.

Williams, the former officiating as Master of Ceremonies. A charming

“young lady” (Mr. J. Newton), presided at the piano and together with the violinist Mr. E. Graham, accompanied the choruses which were lustily sung as the procession wended its way. The lorries subsequently pulled up in front of the shop, where a large gathering had assembled and songs, recitations, fancy dancing and choruses were rendered and a mock court held. The crowd thoroughly enjoyed the proceedings both during the afternoon and evening. The shop day was also a success. The following arc the winners of the competitions at the shop: Lamb: Mr. A. Fowler, 341b5.; sheep: Mr. C. Spring, 801bs.; nail driving: ladies, Mrs. R. Owen; men, Mr. R. Dcsjardines; and for the cake four ladies tied: Mesdames J. Andrews, J. Thompson, T. Tuna, and C. Rand, weight, lllbs. ll^ozs.
