NEWS AND NOTES.

“When we make a mistake, I notice we generally blame the reporter and say we have been misrepor-: ted,” declared Mr. ,1. McCor.t at the recent meeting of the South Canterbury Executive of the Farmers’ Union, when discussing a newspaper report of a meeting held in Wellington (states the Timaru Post). He added: “When our mistakes are not reported, the reporter does not get the credit!” There have been as many “fish stories” circulated about large eels as about monster trout and salmon, and (says the Southland News) it was only on seeing two extremely (well-grown samples of the species caught in the Mataura River by two Athol fishermen, Messrs Price and Batson, that one could have any conception of the huge size to which eels could grow. The total weight of the pair was 391 b, and the longest of the two measured 4 feet 8 inches in length. Certain parts of the Mataura River have always abounded in these fish, and it would not be at all surprising if even larger specimens are not caught.
