FORTY-EIGHT YEARS AGO.
'The following’ are extracts from the “Manawatu Herald” dated December 2nd, 1879: — 'Shipping: —The Stormbird which left Wellington at 5 p.m. on the 28th and experienced heavy N.W. wind with high sea running, anchored at Eapiti at 2 a.m. on 29th, in company with the Jane Douglas, bound for Rangitikei, left at 5 a.m. on 30th, arriving alongside the wharf at 10 same day. One passenger and six steerage passengers. Arrivals in port:—The schooner Amaranth, from Onehunga, with 25,000 feet timber; the schooner Falcon, from Greymouth, 53 tons of coal, Government; and the s.s. Huia, from Wellington,, with 10 cases whisky, 5 cases Old Tom, 5 cases brandy, 10 boxes tea, 5 cases claret, and sundries. We are pleased to chronicle the advent of gas in Manawatu. Mr. A. J. Whyte, having with his usual enterprise determined to lead the van in the matter. The machine to be employed is a small one. It will be placed in the storeroom on the ground floor and the whole of the rooms on the lower floor will be lighted from it; whilst jets of gas will also burn in the passages upstairs. Mr. Whyte expects to have 30 burners fitted up. Whilst congratulating him upon his enterprise we would also congratulate the district upon the possession of a settler who is determined that Foxton shall lead the district in improvements. The rainfall for November was 4.05 inches and rain fell on 10 days. The rainfall for November, for the previous six years was given as follows: —1874 3.63 inches; 1875 0.55 inches; 1870 3.55 inches; 1877 3.75 inches; 1878 4.15 inches. (The rainfall for November 1927 was 5.04 inches).
The Railway Department notify that on Wednesday and Saturday the train that usually leaves Wanganui, at 4.15 p.m. will be detained until 6 p.m. for the convenience of persons wishing to see Chiarini’s circus.
Mr. Hulke has secured the bell of the City of Auckland which will be installed in the local school. That the caretaker was pushing on with the formation and metalling of the Palmerston North —Foxton road was an item included in the Manawatu County Council engineer’s report. He strongly urged the calling for tenders for metalling portion of the Foxton-Sanson road.
