MAORI’S FORTITUDE.
AMPUTATION OF LEG. LIMB BOUND WITH TWINE. A remarkable story is told at Morere, Gisborne, says the Auckland Herald, of a serious operation said to have been performed on himself by a Maori, Johnny Weka, aged 48, who for some years has resided in the Morere district. Weka suffered for many years from an affection of one leg and it is stated that recently he bound his leg tightly with twine and with a razor cut off the limb below the knee. Later Weka untied the twine and almost bled to death, before he was found.
Weka was immediately removed to the Wairoa hospital and from inquiries there last week it learned that he was making satisfactory progress toward recovery from his remarkable operation.
A Wairoa correspondent confirms the story and and states that the native not only cut off his leg but buried the severed portion. Had lie not loosened the knot in the ligature of twine he applied to his leg he would not have been in danger through loss of blood.
