THE SUPPLEMENTARY ESTIMATES.
GRANT OF £SOOO FOR MASSEY COLLEGE. Wellington, Last Night. Expenditure totalling £206,547 is provided for in the Supplementary Estimates. The sum of £2158 is to tie set aside for the remission of the balance of the death duties in the estate of the late John McGregor. An additional £50,000 is provided for extra labour in connection with the maintenance of telegraphic and telephone lines. Expenses of Chief Telegraph Engineer in attending World Radio Conference, £IOOO. Purchase of stock, etc., for Massey Agricultural College, £SOOO. Compassionate allowance to widow of late Hon. R. F. Bollard, £1250. Additional subsidy for teachers’ superannuation fund,, £25,000. Women’s National Reserve Residential Nursery, £2OO. Subsidies towards salaries of Plunket nurses, £2OOO. For maintenance of Ivaritane Hospital, Wellington, £IOOO. Girl Guides’ Association, £SOO (£1 for £1). Towards cost of New Zealand representative at International Economic and Naval Disarmament Conference, £550. Grant to Maori Arts and Crafts Board, £1252. For purchase of land in connection with Taupo fisheries, £4250. For Prison farm and garden development, £9OOO. Other compassionate allowances, besides that to Mrs. Bollard, are as follows: (Widow of T. R. A. Smith, a postman, killed while on duty, £lOlO. Widow of E- J. Casey, labourer, killed while on duty, £852. Widow of S. C. Kiddell, linesman, killed while on duty, £507. Widow of late W. Jolliffe, £470. Widow of the late P. S. Waklie, £460. The votes for the maintenance and construction of main highway are £25,000 and £75,000 respectively. A. special grant of £1250 is to be made to Sir Truby King on his retirement. An additional £5700 is to be voted for repairs, alterations, docking, etc., of H.M.S. Dunedin, and £535 for the mine-sweeper H. M. S. Whakakura. The charges for the Napier Harbour Board Commission are £3,500, and this amount, which is recover able, is to be voted. A further £IO,OOO is provided for portion of the freight rates on fertilisers carried by the Railway Department. A subsidy of £BOOO is to be voted for herd-testing associations. To assist in meeting the 1926 deficit, £3OOO is to be granted to the Otago University, which will also receive £I,OOO to provide for additional maintenance in respect to new medical and dental school buildings. An additional £IO,OOO is provided for the restoration of road works and bridges damaged by flood, and an additional £11,293 for maintenance and repairs of roads. To cover the expenses of the confiscated Native lands commission, a further £SOO is to be allowed. The sum of £9OOO is to be granted for prison farm and garden development work. Charges for the commission of inquiry into the Dobson mine disaster are to be met by a vote of £306. £IOOO is to be granted the New Zealand Cricket Council to assist in meeting the expenses of the recent tour of the New Zealand cricketers abroad. The sum of £355 is to be voted for the expenses of the New Zealand representatives at the opening of the Commonwealth Federal Parliament at Canberra. An additional £2,000 is to be provided for the cost of official functions and the entertainment of visitors to the Dominion. A further £5,000 is to be appropriated in connection with the visit of the Duke and Duchess of York. The women’s division of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union is to receive a grant of £l5O towards the cost of railway transit of nurse and visiting housekeeper.
