ROAD TO THE SEASIDE.

DISCUSSED BY CHAMBER OF COMMERCE. At Thursday night’s meeting of the Foxton Chamber of Commerce, Mr. A. Alsop referred to the unsatisfactory condition of road access to the Beach. He said access to the river foreshore was blocked by drifting sand and it was practically impossible for motor vehicles to traverse the track leading to the sanatorium, which, if formed and metalled, would provide permanent and safe access. He related his experiences and said the means of access was dangerous and a disgrace to those responsible. He said he had resided at the beach permanently for four years and together with all other residnets had paid rates and charges to the Manawatu County Council and Harbour Board. The Beach Improvement Committee had done a good deal of work from funds voluntarily raised. Among other things he said they had constructed a right-of-way for pedestrians to obtain which property owners had conceded portion of .their land and this was now used by motorists. The Harbour Board had promised to do things for four years, but very little had-been done to improve road access. The Beach Committee had planted 10,500 trees by voluntary labour, had provided a hall and public tennis courts, and they expected more 'consideration from the Harbour Board and County Council than they had received.^ Mr. Perreau said he was of opinion that the Harbour Board could not expend its revenue from rents on other than harbour works.

The president said the Board had subsidised road work and paid rates to the Manawatu County Council. Mr. Barron said the Manawatu County Council appeared to pay special attention to the Tangimoana seaside settlement. The County had received a grant of £4OO from the Government last year and £IOOO the previous year for roads at this settlement —and some of the roads had been washed away. A member: Perhaps the Manawatu County Councillors have sections at Tangimoana. Mr. Barron continuing said he would move that the member for the district be asked to apply for a grant of £IOOO for roading purposes. The motion was seconded by Mr. Perreau, who said something should be done to improve the road. The motion was carried. A further motion was moved by Messrs Christie and Smith that the Harbour Board be informed of the impossible condition of the sanatorium road and respectfully request that this be put in order.
