The death took place at Pahiatua on Saturday last of a well-known settler in the person of Mrs. Quirke, wife of the late Michael Quirke, and mother of Senior Detective Quirke, of Palmerston North, aged 78 vears.

A telegram from New Plymouth announces the death of Mr. Edward Doc-krill, who was Mayor of New Plymouth from 1897 to 1902 and in 1906-7. Prior to 1880 he spent 14 years on the West Coast and on the Thames goldfields. The Secretary of State for the Dominions (Mr L. S. Amery) arrived in Auckland yesterday, accompanied by Mrs Amery. Miss Doirll, who is engaged in Maori missionary work on behalf of the Presbyterian Church in the Urewera Country, is on a, brief holiday visit to Foxton, and is the guest of Miss Duncan. Miss Doull gave an interesting address to members of the Presbyterian Bible Class in the church last night on the work she is engaged in. “Tiger’’ Flowers, the Presbyterian negro minister, who once held the middle-weight championship of the world, is dead as a result of an operation on a. growth over an eye, states a Sydney message. He died a wealthy man. He won the world’s middle title from the late Harry Greb and lost it to Micky Walker, who holds it at the moment.

A native of New Zealand, Mr. John Middleton Frankland, formerly of Foxton, was awarded' the first prize at Yale University in the annual Brooks’- Bright essay contest for students of American colleges. This young man is the son of Mr. Herston Frankland, and grandson of Mrs. F. W. Frandland, of Wellington.
