BOOKMAKING CHARGE.
ACCUSED ELECTS TO BE TRIED BY JURY. Auckland, November 17. Harry Marks appeared at the Magistrate’s Court this morning on a charge of having carried on the business of a bookmaker on August G last. Chief-Detective Cummings prosecuted, Marks preferring to go before a judge and jury rather than be dealt with summarily. 'William Henry Bonner, hairdresser, said that he knew Marks and had done some betting with him. Some days prior to the Grand National race meeting held at Christchurch in August last Marks called at witness’s shop. Witness took a double from Marks at £2O to 5/-, the two horses behig Beau Cavalier in the Grand National Steeplechase and Wharncliffe in the Grand National Hurdles. Marks was given 5/- four days before the racing commenced. Marks made an entry in a small notebook at the time. The double Beau Cavalier and Wharncliffe won, but so far Marks had not paid witness the £2O. When first asked about the matter Marks told witness he would “pay when he pleased.” Marks said that witness was “anything but a gentleman” because he called at his house. A constable gave evidence of betting with accused, and a detective said he knew accused to be following the occupation of a bookmakei. Accused pleaded not guilty and was committed to the Supreme Court for trial.
