NEWS AND NOTES.
An authoritative statement from the Sydney University regarding cancer research work there points 'out that important work has al-
ready been done jn determining the action of X-rays upon normal and malignant cells and in the use of colloidal lead. It may he that in the year 1928 relief hitherto impracticable may he afforded many sufferers beyond the hope of snrgery. If what a prominent New Zealand sporting paper says can be accepted as true, trout in Taranaki have suddenly grown to noble dimensions (remarks the “Herald”), and will rapidly become world famous, for it is solemnly stated that a South Taranaki fisherman, after an outing on the Waingonoro, reported that his catch was four fish of a total weight of 96 lbs. One wonders whether it is a specially “tall” fish story or a misprint for 16. A striking story of a bull fight was told by a Gisborne resident last week. He stated that while* lie was at Muriwai a few days previously he saw an encounter between two bulls, a Hereford and a Polled Angus. As the fight commenced, the remainder of the cattle on the farm ran from all directions, and gathered round the contestants, just as the crowds congregated at the arenas in Spain, or as New Zealanders collected when there was a scuffle in a busy street. On this occasion, the fight did not last long, for the Hereford threw in the towel and retreated, leaving the victorious Polled Angus surrounded by a mob of cattle.
