PICKING THE WINNERS.
NEWSPAPER FINED.
~ Christchurch, Yesterday. Four Gaming Act charges against the manager of ‘‘The Sim” newspaper were heard before Mr. E. D. Mosley, S.M., yesterday afternoon. The charges were in reference to a competition in which a prize of £IOOO was offered for the first person picking the correct order of the first three horses in the New Zealand Cup and the New Zealand Trotting Cup races. The entrance fee was ten shillings, or three months’ subscription to “The Sun.” The Magistrate said he would be glad if the matter went to the Full Court, and he would help to get it there if deemed advisable, but he could not conceive of that body coming to the conclusion that the element of skill was the main or even the predominating element. The defendant was convicted and fined £lO and costs. Security for ,▼ appeal was fixed at £2O in addition.
