A BODY IN A BOAT.
NEGRO WITH HIS THROAT CUT. Auckland, Oct. 24. A dugout canoe, containing the dead body of a negro, was picked up by the Tongariro, which arrived at Auckland last night. The throat and stomach of the dead man, who had evidently met his death some days previously, were badly slashed . It was on the afternoon of September 29th, when the liner Tongariro was within a day and a« half’s steam of Colon that a member of the crew sighted the drifting dugout. As the body of the negro was badly decomposed, the dugout was weighted with fire irons and sunk by the Tongariro’s boat crew. On arrival at Colon the affair was reported to the shore authorities. How the negro met his death will probably forever remain a mystery. The fact that the man was badly slashed is a broad hint of murder, although there is no evidence to prove the theory.
