HERD TESTING.

MANAWATU ASSOCIATION. MEETING OF EXECUTIVE. The monthly meeting of the executive of the Manawatu Herd Testing Association was lield this morning, Messrs W. H. Gimblett (chairman), F. Woods, W. E. Thomas, E. J. Legg and W. It. Hopcroft being present. Messrs Gimblett and Hopcroft reported that they had been unable to go to Levin to discuss group affairs. Messrs Legg, Woods, Thomas and the secretary, however, had attended a meeting there. Concerning the visit, Mr Legg reported that- the Levin members were anxious to increase the testers’ wages, were keen about testing and much more advanced than here. Remarkable development had taken place there. 'I he majority of the members were willing to pay 5s for testing and wanted the association to federate, to have the calfmarking system brought in next year and the expenses of their delegate (Mr Evans) paid when he attended meetings of the executive. Just on the other side of Levin, not long ago, had been huge stumps, the remains of heavy bush amongst which had been a few hungry bullocks; to-day, in place of those stumps, there were comfortable homesteads, while some of the finest dairy cattle in the world replaced those bullocks.

The chairman said it was impossible to increase the testers’ wages. One of them was a married man with a family, but even by continuing the present wages to the two tests the association was sustaining a loss. The committee resolved, after a short discussion, that the chairman and the secretary (Mr Ferguson) should visit Levin on Saturday to confer with the group committee and the testers. The secretary stated that so far as lie knew there were 2500 cows to be tested at Rata, the number demanding the services of another tester. It was decided that another such officer he appointed. A motion of sympathy with Mr A. Fairbrother (tester at Apiti for the association) in the death of his father was passed. Accounts amounting to £248 2s 4d were passed for payment.
