NEWS AND NOTES

It is stated that mumps and measles are prevalent in Waimate, Smith Canterbury.

In less than a fortnight's time the New Zealand Cricketers will be in Sydney to play the last foreign match of their tour against a strong New South Wales side. The West Coast coalmines are already (being handSicappfed by the action of the Government in reducing its demands for New Zealand coal for use on the railways (says the Grey River Argus). The reason why the quantity of coal hither to taken weekly for the railway has been cut down is generally understood to be that the Government, for some reason or other, has now begun using large quantities of Australian coal again. It is a queer method of coping with the unemployment.

So far this season a North Taranaki company killed in the vicinity of 20,000 bobby calves, and possibly 5000 to 10,000 have been dealt with by a South Taranaki company (states the Post). A noticeable feature is ? the absence of their heifer calves. No doubt farmers are rearing the heifers to meet the heavy, demand for grade Jersey heifers which is coming from outside the district. It is hoped that the industry will be allowed to continue by the Home authorities. It has brought a considerable amount of money into the district during a period when the milk cheques were practically nil and in addition has created extra work for the freezing works when, in normal times, they would be haying a slack season.
