NO TRACE OF MISSING LAUNCH.
Auckland, October 16.
The disappearance of the launch Speedwell, which left Auckland for Waitangi, Bay of Islands, on September 2G, goes down as a mystery of the sea, leaving not a stick of wreckage. The owner and helmsman, Edwin Walker, was an experienced seaman who knew the coast, but nevertheless it is thought the launch came to grief close in shore.
The master .of the Government steamer Tutanekai, which has arrived at Onehunga after 12 days on the northern coast, reports that a close search was made from Great Barrier to the Bay of Islands. It is his opinion that the Speedwell foundered near Elizabeth Reef or Wide Berth Island, about half-way between Whangarei and Cape Brett. There is a treacherous bottom on this part of the coast, and it is possible that the launch struck and filled.
