Mr. J. H. Downes left Foxton for Nelson this morning. Mrs. and Miss Downes left on Thursday.
Mr. and Mrs. S. H. Poole and their daughter, who have been on a six months tour of Great Britain and.the Continent, will return to Foxton next week.
Rev. P. J. Mairs, of Paraparauinu, is spending the week end at Foxton, havng kindly undertaken to supply for Rev. S. Peryman tomorrow at Shannon and Foxton.
The novelist, William Le Queux, is dead, at Knockc, Belgium, after a lengthy illness. Deceased was 63 years of age, and educated partly in England and on the Continent, lie travelled widely and wrote a long series of popular novels, mostly of a sensational character. He was an enthusiast in wireless. Mr. Millen, who has been aetiugmanager of the local branch of . the Bank of New Zealand, during Mr. Poole’s absence, will leave Foxton at the end of next week. During his stay in Foxton, Mr. Millen has taken a keen interest in the local Chamber of Commerce and his departure will be regretted by members of that body. Mr. W. S. Heyes, newly appointed gas manager, is a married man, 45 years of age and now resident at Hamilton. Mr. Heyes has had considerable experience in gas manufacture and management and was in charge of the erection of the local works, many years ago. He was for seven years manager of the Sumner gas works, the erection of which lie also supervised, and later, was five years manager of the Eltham works. Mr. Heyes, who is a bandsman, will take up his duties locally on the 22nd of this month.
