BOWLING.
farewell and presentation TO Mr. DOWNES.
Last evening a pleasant gathering was was held in the Racing Club buildings, when members of the Foxton Bowling Club met to farewell Mr. J. H. Downes, and present him with a token of esteem and re- ■ cognition of his services. . The President, Mr. R. Bryant, expressed the regret felt by members at the departure of Mr. Downes, who he said, had not only proved an enthusiastic member, but had rendered valuable service /to the club, especially as secretary which office he had held for a term of two years. Members felt that they would like to show their appreciation in a tangible form, and he had much pleasure in presenting Mr. Downes with a gold-mounted fountain pen, with case, which would serve to remind him of the pleasant associations which he was leaving behind in Foxton. Messrs Perreau, Barr, Walker and Walton endorsed the President’s remarks, stressing the great assistance Mr. Downes had rendered the club, and also his enthusiasm as a bowler and a clean sport, and expressing the hope, that he would follow the sport in Nelson, after Which the health of the guest whs pledged, with musical honours. Mr. Downes, in reply, thanked members for .their- expressions of appreciation, and for their handsome gift, all of which he much appreciated. He sincerely hoped the club would have a successful future. In his opinion the coming season should prove a good one, as the membership had considerably increased, and with an enthusiastic president like Mr. Bryant the club could not help but improve its position.
After some little time had been spent on the informal discussion concerning club matters, Mr. Perreau said he would like to propose a hearty vote of thanks to Mr. Bryant for his generosity in arranging
for the opportunity of saying goodbye to Mr. Downes, and providing the refreshments. The motion was carried by acclamation.
At, last night’s meeting it was reported that twenty new members had already been proposed this season, with prospects of a further increase. This gives evidence of the coming season being a successful \ one..
