“THE KICK OF OUR LIVES.”
AMERICANS AND THE KING.
London, October 10
“The kick of our lives” is how 300 American Legionaries referred to the handclasp and conversation with the King and Queen in the Throne Room at Buckingham Palace.
The entire company was amazed to find that the King was just human. The following are some (juaint impressions:—
“He’s just a human, likeable gentleman.” “It’s a revelation to us fellows that a human being who sits on a throne could lie so demoehatie as to talk fo us.”
“I never thought I could feel at. home in a Royal Palace, hut King George did it.”
Their Majesties were particularly sympathetic towards a blind lieutenant from Pennsylvania, who was blinded in the last week of the war. Describing the occasion he said: “I' could see nothing, but I could feci the sympathy of your King and Queen flow right through me. None of our fellows will ever forget what a great fellow your King is.”
