NEWS AND NOTES.

A new type of. telephone box for housing public instruments has been imported by the Government and the first of the type in Gisborne is to be erected shortly at, Victoria township. The box is of a design reminiscent of the kiosks from which newspapers are sold m French cities, known to service men as “bombproofs,” and the type is so foreign to New Zealand ideas of street decoration that it is bound to excite comment. However, the new class of telephone box has features which make it popular with the department’s experts, and apart tically everlasting, being constructed in the main in cast steel.

Having just taken a seat in a hairdressing saloon at Epsom, Auckland, on Thursday, Levi Coupland, aged 80, drew a long breath and expired. For many years he had a grain business in Auckland and Wellington, and subsequently, for eighteen years, was connected with the stationery department of the Brett Companjq retirng a year ago. 'He was interested in the Choral Society and in cricket and Rugby. He is survived by his wife. At an inquest a verdict was returned of death from heart disease.
