MAGISTRATE REFUSES BAIL.
Auckland, October 6.
The Postmaster at Ngongotaha, Frederick John Heerdcgen, appeared in the Police Court this morning on a charge of being in possession of £240 alleged to have been stolen by him. He was also further charged with attempting to steal £9O, the property of the Postmaster-Gener-al. Chief-Detective Cummings ask.ed for a remand to Rotorua on 14th Octobei*, and when Heerdegen asked for bail the Chief-Detective opposed it, saying that there were some bad features in the case.
It was alleged that the accused received several large sums of money and had not accounted for them, and while the police were making inquiries the accused had disappeared. There were also other circumstances, said the Chief-De-tective, which he did not wish to disclose at present. The Magistrate, Mr. Hunt, said that there were some suggestions of attempted suicide and fire. He declined to grant bail.
