Manawatu Herald TUESDAY, OCTOBER 4, 1927. THE GAS WORKS.

THE 'Borough Council will consider applications for the position of gas works manager next Monday. Since the 'Council took over the - works they have been fortunate in securing the services of capable and experienced men, including one or two of outstanding ability. It is true that in municipalising the gas works, the Council paid considerably above the capital cost, of the works and were further compelled to increase this amount to bring the works up-to-date. On top of this the borough has been linked up with electricity which has resulted in a marked falling off in gas consumption as an illuminant. For cooking and heating, however, gas is, still a necessity and in this respect is more economical than electricity. The Council is faced with the problem of economising the gas works administration without endangering quality and efficiency. It is probable that a further sum will be required to repair the retorts and in making the appointment the Council should give preference to one skilled in construction work.
