THE ALL BLACKS
SOUTH ISLAND DEFEAT NORTH
ISLAND.
In an exciting and stubbornlyfought Rugby contest before 20,000 spectators at Athletic Park, Wellington, on Saturday, the South Island prevailed over the North Island by the narrow margin of one point, South Island 31—'North Island 30. There was very little between the teams, but the South deserved their victory, as their forwards put more weight into the serum and hammered more honestly in the ruck, thus giving their backs better opportunities. The Southern backs were superior on the day, and outplayed the Northern rearguard. Though combination was not of the best, many spectacular passing bouts jvere witnessed. 13 CERTAINTIES. London, October 1. £ Torrential rain fell when the New South Wales Rugby team met and defeated Swansea by 11 points to nil. ) The Welsh forwards held their own but the backs were completely outclassed. The visitors crossed their opponents’ line thrice and converted one try before the interval. In the second half the ground broke up, making it impossible to handle the ball accurately. The Welsh revelled in the mud and kept the Waratahs busy defending, but the defence' was too strong, and the game ended: New South Wales 11, Swansea 0. HOROWHENUA DEFEATS MANAWATU. For the third time this season, Manawatu and Horowhenua met at Rugby, and the southerners proving victorious on Saturday won the rubber. The match was played at Levin as a charity match, the gate proceeds being handed to the Manawhenua skipper, Harry Jacob, who is now in hospital as a result of injuries received in a match at Levin a week ago. There was not a large crowd of spectators, although this fact is no barometer regarding the amount of the proceeds, as tickets were sold in profusion in Palmerston North and Levin. The game proved to be open and fast, although faulty handling was in evidence on both sides. The Manawatu team in the second spell faced both a strong sun and light breeze and the forwards tired quickly. The game was not a spectacular one, the score Horowhenua 21 —Manawatu 18, being a fair indication of what the match was like.
