GOVERNMENT’S PREFERENCE

When the House of Representatives assembled this afternoon, Mr \V. E. Parry (Auckland Central) asked the acting Minister of Railways whether the contract for all the steel girders and other material for the new Auckland station would be given to New Zealand firms. This, lie said, would relieve unemploy-
ment. The Hon. W. Downie Stewart replied that it had been the policy of the Government for some time past to give reasonable, preference to New Zealand material for all contracts, and a similar course of action would be followed in the acceptance of tenders for the new Auckland railway station.
