Miss Muller, who has been in charge of the C. M. Ross Coy.’s showroom here, for the past 18 months has severed her connection with the firfn. The position has been filled by the appointment of Miss Ashby, recently with Warnock’s Wanganui, and Blyth’s Ltd., Dannevirke.

The death took place at Dunedin on Sunday, 25th inst., of Mr. David Barron, aged 82 years. The late Mr. Barron was appointed District Surveybr for Maniototo under the Provincial Government in 1866. Subsequently he was appointed Commissioner of Crown Lands and chief surveyor for Westland, Southland and Otago. He retired from the latter position in 1910, after; 44 years distinguished service. He leaves one son, Mr. D. R. Barron ; of Foxton, and three daughters, one of whom is Miss Vida Barron, M.A., of the Otago University. Mr. Barron left Foxton for Dunedin yesterday, to be present at the funeral.

Mrs. W.. Howard, a resident of Auckland, celebrated her ninetyseventh birthday yesterday. Mrs. Howard was born in Dublin in' 1830. Although Mrs. Howard is still wonderfully active for one whose years are only a few less than 100, her memoi’y is now not nearly so _good as it was a year or so ago. She can remember; however, that her mother and elder sister went to England to see the marriage of Queen Victoria in 1840, seven months before Auckland was founded. Up till four months ago, Mrs. Howard when she was not busying herself about the scullery, which she regarded as her own particular domain, was almost a constant reader. With her books and newspapers she was always happy, and she took a remarkable interest in world affairs. Now her sight will not allow. her to do much reading, but she gets a lot of pleasure from a gramophone.
