BOXING CHAMPIONSHIP.
TUNNEY RETAINS THE TITLE
WINS ON POINTS,
Gene Tunney successfully defended the heavyweight boxing championship, defeating Jack Dempsey, the former holder of the title, on, points. It was a strenuous fight, and the challenger had much the better of rounds six and seven, flooring the champion, who rose on the count of nine. In later rounds, however, Tunney displayed more skilful boxing and greater strength than Dempsey, who appeared to have lost his old-time ferocity and clear-headedness.
It is estimated that 150,000 spectators were present and the > gate receipts amounted to 2,800,000 dollars.
In round seven Dempsey floored Tunney with a right and left to the jaw, and Tunney rose on the count of nine. The contest went the full ten rounds.
