MOTOR-CYCLIST KILLED.

EXCESSIVE SPEED OVER LOOSE METAL.

Carterton, September 19

A motor-cycle accident attended with fatal results occurred on the Western Lake Road, near the Pigeon Bush railway station at about 6.20 p.m. on Saturday. Three young men, R. Haylock, M. Doohan, and W-. Monteith, railway employees at Cross Creek, were returning to Cross Creek on a heavy motor-cycle and side-car. While proceeding along the road, the cycle skidded on some loose shingle on the road, when Haylock who was riding and owned the cycle, lost control of the machine, which left the road and crashed into a fencing post, and finished up among heavy trees. Haylock was pinned between the side-car and cycle, receiving internal injuries, and a fractured arm. Doohan, who was on the pillion seat, sustained a compound fracture of the right leg, a severe cut on the knee, fractured right arm, and also had an ear badly lacerated. Monteith, who was more fortunate, was riding in the side car, and escaped with a severe shaking. The front of the cycle was buckled up by the impact. The plight of the unfortunate men was observed by Mr. F. Reily, and assistance was quickly summoned. The injured men, after receiving medical attention, were removed to the South Wairarapa Hospital, where Haylock died at 3.30 on Sunday afternoon. Doohan is doing as well as can be expected under the circumstances. The late Mr. Haylock, who was 26 years of age, was train examiner’ at Cross Creek, where he had been employed for the past 12 months, and previously was employed at Mercer. He was popular with the community at Cross Creek. His mother resides at Grey Lynn, Auckland where the body will be taken for interment.

At an inqpest, the Coroner returned a verdict of accidental death, and added that the accident was undoubtedly due to the excessive speed at which.the deceased was riding his motor-cycle over a newly-metalled road.
