RUGBY FOOTBALL.

The New South Wales touring team defeated Devon and Cornwall 011 Saturday at Devonport, by 30 points to 3.

At Christchurch on Saturday Otago defeated Canterbury (the Shield holders), by 13 points to 6.

Wellington were defeated at Auckland on Saturday, by the Auckland representatives by 21 points to 3. Rain fell throughout the game and the ground , was a quagmire. At half time the score was three all. In the second spell Auckland dominated the play.

At Hawera on Saturday Wanganui defeated Taranaki by 14 points to 12. A sensational incident marked the first spell. Leo Bourke, a Taranaki threequarter, whose appearance in All Black trials was regarded as a certainty, sustained a broken leg when he crashed in a hard tackle by his vis a vis Jones.

The following have been selected by Messrs W. A. Guy and J. Crowpey to represent Taranaki and Wanganui against Wellington and Manawhenua in the All Black trial at Wanganui on Wednesday: —Full back: A. Petty; threequarters: W. McLennan, H. W. Brown and E. Vangioni; five-eights: D. Johnston (captain), and W. Wakeling; half: J. Duncan; rover: P. Stiver; forwards: J. Walker, P. Leahy, J. Johnston, R. O’Keefe, P. Ward, W. Robinson, E. iCoulston. Emergencies: (backs) : A. J. Darby and P. Morris; (forward) : J. Young and C. Wills.

At Westport, Buffer and West Coast defeated Nelson, Golden Bay and Motueka, in the All Black trial game by 20 points to 15.

At Timaru, South Canterbury, defeated an Otago team bv 25 points to 23.

After a remarkably- fast game played on the Levin Domain on Saturday, Wanderers wrested a lastminute viectory from Hui Mai, this season’s senior champions, in the Nash Cup knock-out competition, by 14 points to 13, thereby placing themselves in the final against Shannon.

Speaking at the Footballers’ ball at Rongotea on Thursday night Mr. H. J. Fagan, president of the Te Kawau Sub-Union, in his opening remarks sketched the history of the Sub-Union, saying that five years ago some enthusiasts in the north end of the Union convened a meeting in Rongotea and since then football in the district had prospered. The first year saw four senior and four junior teams, this year there were four senior, five junior and four third grade teams—a great advance in football. Rangiotu had come in this season and there was a prospect of Foxton coming in also.
