When announcing the winners of the points prizes at the conclusion of the show, the president (Mr D. Christie), said this was the first show held in the new hall and the. society and exhibitors appreciated the added conveniences and appointments. He said two years ago a, proposal was mooted to wind up the society. Such a step would have been matter for regret, as the society was an institution which was a valuable asset to the town besides being educational in other ways, and gave a stimulus to people to cultivate beautfiul and profitable surroundings. He was pleased to report that the society was now in a flourishing condition as , disclosed by this year’s balance-sheet which showed a larger credit balance than at any time in the history of the society* The fire which destroyed the Town Hall also destroyed the society’s property and fittings. Fortunately these were insured and with the insurance money, backed by the generosity of the Foxton public, up-to-date staging equipment had been procured and the facilities now obtaining were second to none. So the fire, said the president, had really been a 1 blessing in disguise. Mr. Christie expressed pleasure in noticing that exhibitors had shown from outside districts, notably from Otaki and Rongotea. The society would always welcome outside enthusiasts in horticulture and he hoped local growers would reciprocate He congratulated local growers on their success. The judges had carried out their work conscientiously and the stewards and committee and all officials had left no stone unturned to make the show a success. He paid a special tribute to Miss Stevenson’s orchestral party for providing such acceptable selections during the evening and thanked the Borough Council for the use of tables, etc., and the exhibitors and public for their liberal patronage. He hoped the present interest would be maintained in the ' society’s welfare and that the shows of the future would eclipse those of the past and would compare with the best in the province.
lie then announced the winners of the points prizes.
Among the visitors to the local Horticultural Show on Thursday were Mr. and Mrs. Galland, of Newbury, who when residents at Mouto'a were enthusiastic members of the local Society. Mr. Witchell, of Otaki, who is a past-president of the Society, was also present and exhibited some choice bulbs.
The exhibits of pansies at the local Horticultural Show by Mrs. McGill, of Otaki, provided a special attraction. The blooms were magnlilficijent .specimens and (their size fairly dwarfed other specimens.
