Manawatu Herald THURSDAY SEPTEMBER 15, 1927 EDUCATIONAL.
EDUCATION Boards throughout the Dominion and many school committees have been agitated by a rumour that Boards were to 'be abolished. The Minister (Hon. R. A. Wright), is a level-headed man, not given to flippant utterances or political window-dressing. Ever since .he took over the portfolio he has devoted considerable time to a thorough investigation of the Department and possibly has been staggered with promised commitments, and has made it clear on more than one occasion that it is impossible to give immediate effect to innumerable requests. ? He is determined, however, to cut out the “frills” and to. see that all expenditure is justified. It is true that the powers of Boards have been whittled away until they have been reduced to nothing more than glorified school committees. As the Minister, is an ex-Board member he is conversant of this fact and we don’t ‘believe that he favours centralisation or the abolition of Boards, but we take it that he does believe that some amendment is necessary to bring about co-ordina-tion and prevent the present overlapping. The Minister however, has listened patiently to all the rumours afloat and in his own good time will make a considered pronouncement on the subject.
