YOUNG MAN’S SAD END.

HEATH ON SANDHILLS. On Sunday two young men set out from Levin for a day’s sport in the sandhills, which abound in rabbits. When about eight miles from Levin towards the north, tragedy overtook them, John Jowefs, aged about 23, being seriously wounded by the discharge of his gun. According to the statement of the other youth, Jowers’ gun went off accidentally and he received, the charge in his side. The companion soon realised the seriousness of the situation and set off for town to procure assistance. He was some time in reaching Levin, where a party was got together and set out for tiie sandhills to carry the wounded man home.

But a more tragic note was added to the tragedy when the guide found that he could not locate the sandhill near which the accident occurred. The rescuers' did their utmost, but darkness came on only to increase their confusion and they were compelled to return to Levin for more searchers and a supply of lanterns. The augmented party set out again at about eight o’clock to continue the search, but it was not until about 10.30 p.m. that the dead body of young Jowers was found.'
