THE HEMP MARKET.
AUGUST GRADING RETURNS. The grading returns for hemp, tow, stripper tow, and stripper slips for the month of August have been issued by the Department of Agriculture as follows: — Ports G.F. ILF. L.F. C. Auckland 11 143 488 236 Wellington 177 595 967 197 Foxton Wairoa - 12 Picton 78 21 Blenheim Dunedin 196 —•— Pt. Chalmers Bluff 43 145 577 84 Lyttelton 14 6 28 2 Twenty-one bales at Auckland, 60 at Wellington, 70 at Foxton, 5 at Blenheim were rejected. Sixty-two bales at Wellington were condemned. The number of bales in each grade were as follows, the number for the coirresiponding period 'of last year being given in parenthesis: —Fine nil (39), good fair 519 (171), high fair 1550 (1745), low fair 2813 (1526), common 710 (693), rejected 156 (254), condemned 62 (78), a total of 5810 bales as against 4506 graded the sam'e period last year, an increase of 1304 bales. The number of bales at each port were: —Auckland (899, V(feJljington 2058, Foxton 1138, Wairoa 320, Picton 99, Blenheim 196, Dunedin 102, Pt. Chalmers 849, Bluff 50, Lyttelton nil. The following shows the detailed particulars of the tow: — j Ports Ist 2nd 3rd Auckland Wellington ' 2 313 30 Foxton 56 136 5 Wjairoa 170 Picton 31 Blenheim 'Pt. Chalmers Bluff Lyttelton . 8 7 Dunedin Waikuku Eighteen bales at Auckland, 12 at Wellington, 11 at Foxton, 1 at Pt. Chalmers, and 2 at Bluff were condemned. The following shows the number of bales in each grade, the numker for the corresponding period of last year being given in parenthesis: —lst grade 267 (83), 2nd grade 1153 (911), 3rd grade 210 (126), condemned 44 (98), a total of 1674 bales as against 1218 bales graded the same period last year, an increase of 456 bales. The number of bales graded at each port were: —Auckland 262, Wellington 357, Foxton 208, Wairoa 170, Picton 31, Blenheim 42, Pt. Chalmers 21, Bluff 328, Lyttelton 15, Dunedin 6, Waikuku 234. Stripper tow: —Eight bales at Foxton were graded Ist grade, one hundred and eight bales at Wellington and 34 at Foxton were graded 2nd grade, 30 at Foxton were graded 3rd grade. A total number of 180 bales, as against nil, an increase of 180 bales.
Stripper slips:—Two bales at Auckland were graded 2nd grade. Seven bales at Auckland and 9 at Bluff were condemned. Eighty-five bales at Bluff were passed for export. The total number graded was 103 bales against 251 bales graded the same period last year, a decrease of 148 bales. HIGH COMMISSIONER’S iCABLE. The High Commissioner’s cablegram, dated the 3rd inst., reads .■ Hemp, Manila market steady with fair enquiry for spot and close at hand. “J” grade afloat sold at £44 to £44 10s, and Oetober-December shipments quoted at £44. The Sisal market is easier. No. 1, AugustOctober and Oetober-December shipments sold at £37 10s. Buyers now offer £37. Mexican sales are reported at £35 and down to £34. The New Zealand market continues quiet and values are unchanged.
