RANFURLY SHIELD GAME. MANAWHENUA DEFEAT WANGANUI. In perfect weather, six thousand spectators saw Wanganui’s defeat at the hands of Manawhenua in a ltanfurly Shield challenge match at Palmerston North on Saturday by 25 points to 6. Wanganui won the toss and elected to defend the southern goal, Jacob commencing hostilities. Both teams went hard from the outset. W. Parata, receiving from his forwards, opened up nicely to Mete, who after cutting in lost the ball. Jones cleared. Within three minutes of the commencement Leahy got offside, enabling Jacob to open Manawhenua’s account with a penalty. goal. Wanganui attacked strongly, Hunt hurriedly kicking into touch. Manawhenua forced from a lineout, and Jacob changed the venue of play with his drop-kick. Parata fed Mete and "jMSulims from the loose, but the last-named elected to kick, and Darby found touch. Parata, who was playing well at the base of the scrum, next opened out to Mete, Mu'llins, Jacob and Hunt, but McDonald overran his pass. Leahy next had an unsuccessful shot at goaling from a penalty granted Wanganui just outside half-way. Hunt fielded Leahy’s kick to find touch well down. A screwed serum by Wanganui had Manawhenua in difficulties, but W. Parata stemmed the rush, and, although tackled, managed to get in his clearance kick. Galpin threw to Parata from a line-out and the half lost no time in transferring to Mete, to Mul'lins, but the centre was smothered. Not long after Parata gave the ball to Mete, who shortpunted, but Wakeling turned the tables with a line kick. Beilis picked up from the scrum, handing to Blythe, but Ball was tackled in possession. Anderson broke away with Galpin and Jacob in attendance, but Jacob’s pass went out of touch. Hunt, Mullins and Roberts were associated in a movement which, though it gained ground, failed to penetrate the defence. Vangioni quickly turned defence into attack finishing a forty yard sprint with a short punt, and Leahy evened the scores with a good penalty goal. Wanganui 3, Manawhenua 3.
, Jacob secured just inside the Wjanganui twenty-five, and Darby was hard put to it to clear in, time. A penalty awarded against Beilis for handling nearly gave Manawhe'nua three more points, the skipper just missing the uprights with a drop kiek.o Parata, Mete and Jacob invaded Wanganui territory, but Jones cleared in the nick of time. The visiting forwards carried play to the home quarter, where Blythe, Ball and Hartley participated before the last-named was forced out. Vangioni relieving soon after, once more turned defence into attack and Williamson, the Manawhenua full-back, had to go hard to clear before being tackled by Johnson. Heatley and McDonald made full use of a wild pass from Blythe to Ball, and McDonald after short punting, regained possession to fend olf Darby and score in the corner. Jacob failed to allow sufficient margin for the wind. Manawhenua 6, Wanganui 3.
The Wanganui hacks all handled before Vangioni kicked to Jones, who was, however, pushed out by Roberts when nearing the line. Jacob and Heatley worked towards the Wanganui line, where Crawford was penalised for waiting off-side. Beilis, Ball and Blythe carried the ball down field where Vangioni kicked into Hunt’s hands, enabling the Manawatu player to repulse the attack. Tremewan and Anderson rushed play into the Wanganui quarter where Jacob carried on, and picking up he dived over the line. He converted his own try. Manawhenua 11, W'anganui 3. Immediately after half-time Manawhenua made full use of their advantage of the sun, but a penalty against them allowed Wanganui to relieve temporarily. Loose forward play saw Manawhenua again in their opponents’ quarter, but Ball was to the fore with a strong line kick. Fast following up by Jacob had Darby perplexed, but the opposition full-back was successful in clearing. Erratic passing let Crawford and Heatley away, but Darby again cleared. The Manawhenua forwards’ superior condition began to assist them in maintaining the pressure and after Parata had cleverly worked the blind side, McDonald fended off Hartley to cross in the corner. Jacob kicked an excellent goal from a very difficult angle. Manawhenua 16, Wanganui 3.° Beilis was instrumental in placing Wanganui on the offensive immediately after McDonald’s try, and Beilis’s pass was well taken by Johnston, who, although tackled by Tremewan, scored, but Leahy failed with the kick. Wanganui 6, Manawhenua 16. Manawhenua dominated play from then on. Mullins received from Parata and Mete, and, after side-
stepping through all save Darby, he was well taken by the Wanganui full-back. Jacob kicked the ball through Blythe’s hands and took play to Darby, who was able to clear before succumbing to the Manawhenua skipper. Parsons broke away with Tremewan in support and, catching the opposition napping, he ran round to score in a handy position, but Jacob failed with an easy kick. Manawhenua 19, Wanganui 6.
Mete received an injury to his knee which necessitated his departure from the field at this stage. T. Parata replaced him. Jacob, who was playing at the height of his form, sent Mullins and Hunt away. Hunt handed on to McDonald, who was tackled by Jones, but McDonald was able to pass back and to take another pass from Hunt, to go over for a good try. Jacob’s kick struck the posts to rebound into play. Manawhenua 22, Wanganui G.
Another try appeared to be forthcoming to Manawhenua when T. Parata, Mullins and Hunt ran McDonald into position, but after McDonald had drawn Darby his return pass to Hunt was knocked on. W. Parata dummied neatly before transferring to Parata, but the latter’s pass' to Mullins failed to reach centre, Jacob, and his forwards carried play to the Wanganui line, where the ball went into touch. Tremewan secured in the line-out to bullock his way over right on the call of time. Jacob failed to convert. Manawhenua 25, Wanganui 6. Mr. E. G. Clark, of Canterbury, refereed.
On the racecourse on Saturday, Wanderers will meet Awahou Seniors in the first match in the Senior Nash Knock-out Competition. J. Hopa will referee.
