REMARKABLE OPERATION.
NERVES SEPARATED,
SUFFERER FROM PARALYSIS,
Since the important discovery by Dr. Royle and 'the late Professor Hunter,_a few years ago, that sufferers from certain forms of paralysis could be relieved, or cured, by aii] operation on the nerves, some remarkable results have been obtained by Sydney surgeons. One of the latest sufferers to benefit by the treatment is Clement Snow, a young Salvation Army officer attached to the Albion Street Men’s Hostel. About four years ago Snow was stricken with meningitis. He escaped the worst effects of the disease, but was left with his left leg and arm partly disabled, and with such a pronounced tremour that he could scarcely use his arm. After consulting specialists, Snow was sent to Sydney Hospital a month ago and a week later the delicate operation was performed of severing, at the base of the neck, certain nerves affecting the left arm. The effect was immediate, the tremor in the arm practically disappearing the following day. The muscles of the limb are still stiff as a result of the operation, but Snow is confident that when the effects of the wound have passed off he will be able to use the limb freely. “I am not going to worry about my leg,” he said, “I shall be satisfied if my arm is all right.” Snow has left the hospital, but will return at intervals for massage.
