Shortly aifter the game commenced a terrific thunderstorm occurred and rain fell throughout the game in torrents and the field was Hooded, and in places the water was inches deep. , The stoirm and condition of the grounds confined the game to a series of forward rushes. As far as the vanguards were concerned they were ■fairly evenly matched, but Manawhenua managed to Show better staying powers. On a dry filed it is safe to speculate that Taranaki would have, more than held their own. The final ten minutes were as exciting as any period of the match, Manawhenua putting on two tries in about five minutes, the last one just on the call of time. Prior to the game the Shield was presented to Jacob, the captain of the Manawhenua team by Mr. A. M. Ongley, the president of the Combined Union, who, in a brief speech, wished the team success and congratulated them in winning it from Wairarapa.
