THOSE MOTOR PLATES.
“This is an absolute waste of public money,” declared Mr. IT. M. Campbell (Hawke’s Bay) in the House of Representatives last week, indicating an item of £12,000 on the Post and Telegraph Estimates as a recoverable charge for motor plates in connection with the registration of motor vehicles. “The motor owner,” he said, “has to pay for that. It certainly does not come out of the pocket of the State. The £12,000 wasted in this way would be sufficient to construct two or three miles of concrete road, which would be of far greater benefit than new number plate's each year.” Mr. Campbell suggested that the plates could be cleaned up and used for ; several years. “This waste when the country is short of funds, he said, “in my opinion is altogether wrong.”
