ALLEGED ASSAULT.
A' HAMILTON INCIDENT. Hamilton, August 20. Nathaniel Clark, farm-labourer, of Eureka, was arrested in connection with the assault on Mr. W. Dillicar on private information. This morning he was asked to enter into sureties to keep the peace, as complainant was afraid that accused intended to do him and the lady bodily harm. On this assurance being given, no objection was raised, accused being released until Wednesday, the date of the adjournment.
An exciting-episode occurred at Hamilton on Friday night. It is alleged that the life of Mr. W. Dilliear was attempted, and that of a female companion was threatened. Mr. Dillicar, it is said, called in a motor-car for a young nurse to take her to a medical case. When putting her umbrella in the back of the car after entering it, she accidentally struck, a man who was crouching on the floor.
On being discovered the man leapt up and struck Mr. Dillicar a heavy blow on the back of his neck, and a severe struggle ensued. The driver finally ejected the man from the ear and started off.
On arrival at their destination Mr Dillicar and his companion had scarcely pulled up when the man, who evidently had raced past on a motor cycle, sprang out from a hedge, threw open the door, and, it in alleged, lunged at the driver with a knife. Fortunately he missed. A desparate struggle took place, and Mr. Dillicar finally fought off his assailant and drove away. It is understood the man had previously threatened the life of the young lady concerned, who broke off an engagement with him when she found he was a married man, and since then has been the object of his unwelcome attentions.
