Manawatu Herald SATURDAY, AUGUST 20, 1927. LOCAL AND GENERAL

A congregational will be held at the Methodist Church to -morrow evening. Rev. S. Peryman will give a sermonette. Hymn sheets will he provided; and everyone made welcome.

During the progress of the King Country-Manawhenua football match at Ohakune on Wednesday, Coogan (King Country’s) full back, who was making a good attempt to score, had the misfortune to have a leg broken. The unfortunate accident cast quite a gloom/ over the play. Members of the Presbyterian Ladies Social Guild and their male friends were entertained by Mrs. Barron at her residence on Wednesday evening. There was a record attendance and a most enjoyable time was spent. Music and competitions were much enjoyed and all present voted it one of the jolliest gatherings yet held by the guild.

An American millionaire on Wednesday night made the biggest single bet at baccarat in the history of the Deauville Casino. A few days ago he lost £16,000 in one night. He returned on Wednesday, and was winning all the time till he had £lO,000 before him. He then staked the lot upon the turn of a single card and won. He rose from the tables, the net winner of £32,000. The London “Daily Mail” says that the late Mr. J. Ogden Armour’s daughter) Mrs. John Mitchell, reputedly the heiress of £12,000,000, weighed' three pounds when born. She was reared in an incubator until an operation was performed by a Viennese surgeon. Thereafter she was a healthy and normal child. The surgeon’s fees were £IO,OOO. She heard of her father’s condition when in California and dashed to London.

“The next time I break a spring I will charge the account to the council.”, This intimation was conveyed to the Kiwitea County Council at its last meeting by a ratepayer who complained of the state) of a county road. Rates had been collected for many years, but practically no repairs had been effected to the road and a small bridge giving access to this particular ratepayer’s property was in such a bad state that during the past 18 months he had broken two springs on his car.

An old ewe, owned by Messrs Blair and Hunter, Wanganui, is in her seventeenth year, and in lamb for the fifteenth time in her present ownership. ‘Though partly blind she is perfectly healthy. Bought at two from the late Ernest Short for 3 guineas, she has presented her owners with seven ram lambs and seven ewe lambs. The seven ram lambs have averaged ten guineas each, and the seven ewe lambs over two guineas each —about £9O altogether. Add 14 seasons’ wool, and somewhere near £IOO is the gross from this one ewe. Naturally, her owners are proud of her.

Married ladies who are wise should encourage their husbands tp smoke. The beneficent influence of the “weed” has been known to loosen the purse strings in the most surprising manner. Many a wife has learned by experience that the best time) to approach “Father” when a little cheque is wanted is while he is in full enjoyment of his after dinner pipe, and is feeling at peace with all the world! —especially if he smokes our famous New Zealand grown tobacco. Most of the imported brands contain a tremendous lot of nicotine —and that is bad. The purest tobaccos going are the New Zealand ones. Owing to the leaf being toasted (quite a novelty) their flavour and aroma are unusually developed, and as they contain very little nicotine, they may be smoked all day long without fear of consequences. They appeal to all tastes. If you like a. fine aromatic try “Riverhead Gold;” if you prefer a medium flavour ask for “Navy Cut” or “Cavendish;” “Cut Plug No. 10” is full strength.

The Lancashire-New Zealand cricket match has been abandoned.

Another of Von Tempsky’s Forest Rangers, Mr. John Hollings Griffiths, died at Tauranga on Saturday, aged 82 years. Born at Hereford, England, Mr. Griffiths went to Auckland in 1863 and joined Von Tempsky’s Rangers after his arrival. He was in the disastrous engagement with the Maoris at Te Ngutu-o-te-manu, when the force walked iilto an ambush and the gallant Von Tetnpsky was killed. Later Mr. Griffiths joined the Armed Constabulary at Tauranga, where lie lived for 57 years. Mr. Griffiths was clerk to the Tauranga County Council for 35 years.

The advantages of the herd-test-ing work are thus briefly put by “Rusticus” in the “Otago Daily Times:” “It indivilualises each cow and is the only method of estimating the producing ability of each member of the herd. It tests systems of feeding for milk production. It tests the herd sire through production of his daughters. It creates higher values for proved cows and their progeny. It shows positively that some system of milk recording and testing is essential to progress. It will direct attention to loss through faulty separating. During the last year a dairyman with a large herd discovered a loss of 15/- a day by the herd tester chancing to test the skim milk. Herd-testing association meetings can be utilised as a means of bringing district dairymen together, when local and general problems can be discussed.”
