RONGOTEA-KAIRANGA ROAD.
NOT A MAIN HIGHWAY. In reply to the Manawatu County Council’s request that the Rongo-tea-Kairanga Road be declared a main highway a letter was received from the Public Works Department at Thursday’s meeting of the Com- < il stating that the Highway Board was unable to reeommend the Minister of Public Works tor declare this length of road a main highway. The County Clerk reported that he had got' in touch with the secretary of the Main Highways Board requesting reasons for the refusal of the application. The position was that the Board had tremendous commitments and had not sufficient money to meet any fresh demands. The Board could not take on any more roads unless the Government could be convinced of the need to provide the Board with more money. In the further discussion it was pointed out that the road was in constant use by a large volume of traffic and that it should be declared a main highway as its maintenance wa s becoming a burden. It was decided to write to Messrs J. A. Nash and J. Link-later, M’s.P., the Knivarga County Council and the Palmerston North Chamber of Commevee requesting their help in urging the Board to take over the road.
