PRACTICAL JOKE

AUCKLAND HOAX. RUMOURS FROM RANGITOTO. Auckland, August 19. The report that two men had been killed and four injured in blasting operations at Rangitoto Island prison quarry proved to be a hoax. Someone telephoned to the Mount Eden gaol stating that he was speaking from Mount Victoria signal station and had received news of a fatality by signal from Rangitoto. The news spread rapidly and with the arrival of two ambulances, a police van and a mortuary van at the wharf steps a large crowd collected. This was shortly after midday and in spite of the rain the crowd refused to depart until four o’clock when a launch sent to the island by one of the newspapers returned with a definite assurance that the whole affair was a practical joke.
