RARE BIBLES.
OWNED BY MASTERTON RESIDENT. i Masterton, August 15. Reading an account of a valuable Bible owned by the Akaroa Masonic Lodge, and stated to be worth up to £ISOO in London, a resident of Masterton, Mr. A. Clemenas, of Cole Street, showed a Dominion representative a similar copy which he has in his posession. This Bible, like the one owned by the Akaroa Lodge, was published in A.D. 1613, and was limited by command of King James to fifty copies only. It is in an excellent state of preservation, all the type being clearly visible, and the leaves intact. The back has been replaced, but the rest of the cover—what is known as a “public” binding, heavily embossed, and with iron studs — is still good. It has the following entry on the fly-leaf: “From the parish church of Brunton, Hants, and at one time in possession of Edmund Parker, D.D., who, in 1660, visited Brunton and read over the 39 articles, the declaration being signed by the parishioners present.” This declaration, Mr. Clemenas retains. Mr. Clemenas stated that he has also a Bible produced in A.D. 1250, two hundred years before the introduction of printing. It is neatly and laboriously written on vellum. Other Bibles—of 1478, 1490, and onwards —are included in the collection, which formerly were in the possession of Mr. Clemenas’ father.
