George Judd, aged 63 years, a well-known Masterton farmer, was accidently run into by a motor car while cycling in the Masterton-Car-terton road last night and killed. The sight of two starlings flying from a neighbour’s letter box carrying a letter between them surprised a resident of Onehunga. Recovering from his astonishment, he threw a stone at the birds which dropped the envelope. Its contentswere not valuable, but the owners of the box remain in doubt as to how much of their correspondence has already been converted into nest building material. While playing on the sandhills at St. Ivilda, Dunedin, on Saturday, a boy unearthed an attache case containing a collection of jewellery, including diamond rings, necklets, watches, jewel caskets and a Masonic jewel, of a total value of about £4OO. Many people who suffered from the depredations of burglars during the early part of the year were gratified when they received police advice, that their property had been recovered. Workmen engaged in clearing a blockage in the connecting pipe between the storage and receiving tanks in the septic 'tanks met with a somewhat startling experience on Tuesday afternoon. Three men were engaged on the work and it was necessary for them to decend into the septic tank and cut a hole in the sealed tank inside to gain access to the blockage. The gang was working with one man down and two having a “breather.” Shortly after the concrete slab had been chipped out all three men ascended to the surface for a spell and one of them, standing a few feet from the manhole, struck a match to light his pipe. Immediately there was an explosion and the gas from the tank ignited and burned fiercely for three hours before the tank was finally sealed and the flames extinguished. The man who struck the match had his face slightly singed but it was fortunate that no one was in the tank when the occurrence took place. No damage was done.
Many a good story is told about smoking and smokers. The latest comes from Auckland. A bricklayer was called sharply to account by his foreman for smoking “on the job.” “I’m not smoking,” he replied. “But your pipe is in your mouth,” declared the angry foreman. “That’s right,” said the bricklayer. “And mv boots are on my 'feet, but I’m not walking.” The foreman passed on. By the way, if you are looking for something special in the. shape of ’baccy, try our N.Z. varieties. They are excellent, and their fine flavour and delightful fragrance are largely due to the fact that the leaf is toasted. This is quite a novel idea Also (unlike the imported) they contain only a trifling percentage of nicotine. That’s why doctors favour them. Thanks to their wonderful purity they may be smoked all day long without fear of consequences. They come in several strengths. “Riverhead Gold” is mild; “Naw Cut” is medium; and “Cut Plug No. 10” is a splendid full-flavoured tobacco. The latest addition is “Cavendish Mixture.” 55*
