GENERAL NEWS ITEMS.

The following is a passage from a modern geography book, printed at Home and used in secondary schools in New Zealand, referring to emigrants to Australia and New Zealand: “The destination of the emigrants is ‘the bush,’ which is the name given to the inland parts of the country. Many of them serve on farms for a year and then start farming on their own account. They clear the land of the native trees and bushes, cultivate a portion of the clearing, fence it in and stock it with sheep and cattle.”

A case in which the owner of a dog that was killed by a motor car had to pay over £SO damages, with heavy costs, at Napier, on account of injuries to the occupants of the car, which was overturned, was mentioned by Mr. J. T. Kent, of Waikanae, at the meeting of the Farmers’ Union Provincial Executive in Levin last week (says the Chronicle). He remarked that if a drover was liable because his dog go't in the way of a car, the Union ought to take the matter up. Ihe case to which he referred was the first of is kind in New Zealand. Mr. 11. Bond (Rangiotu) pointed out that it would be necessary to have the full particulars of the magisterial hearing before the Union could make any protest. No action was taken by the meeting.
