OBITUARY.
The death took place at Akatarawa (Upper Hutt district) on Thursday last of a well-known settler in the person of John Grant, aged 70. He was the eldest son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Robert Grant, pioneer Gladstone settlers, having established “Bannockburn” Station about the year 1865 after earlier experience in the Lower Valley dating back to 1852, the year of their arrival from Brora, Sutherlandshire, Scotland. The late Mr. Grant was, in association most of the time with his brother Adam, identified with the control of “Bannockburn” (the scene of the first Highland gathering in New Zealand, in 1885). Many of the older generation in the Wairarapa will regret his passing, and sympathise with his widow and son (Stanley) in their bereavement, as well as extend to a wide circle of relatives an expression of condolence. Among. the latter number are Mrs. Alex. Stevenson, of Kaitawa, Pahiatua (sister), and his brothers Joseph (Otaki), Biggary (Dannevirko), Robert (Webber), and Gordon (Hastings), all widelyknown in farming circles.
