MANAWIHENUA WINS RANFURLY SHIELD. At Carterton on Saturday, Manawhenua defeated Wairarapa by 18 points to 1C and thus won the Ranfurly Shield provisionally. Manawhenua kicked off, and after a line-out in their twenty-five, the forwards worked their way to the left corner, where Parata secured possession, and crossed, but the try was disallowed. Shortly afterwards the Manawhenua sent the ball thro-, ugh their forwards to Darragh, who passed to Crawford to Hunt, but the last-named was robbed on the quarter mark, and the ball went into touch. Manawhenua appeared to be in danger when Stringfellow took possession, and started down the wing, but Jacob brought about a nice tackle, and enabled his men to close round. From scrummaging play in front of Wairarapa’s posts, Jacob transferred to Heatley, who attempted to kick a field goal, but this failed, and Cooke forced. Manawhenua were showing the greater facility in getting away from the scrums and line-outs, with the result that they were holding a territorial advantage. At length Stringfellow gained possession, and kicked over the line, with the result that Harvey beat Jacob, and fell on the leather. Cundy made the goal. Wairarapa 5, Manawhenua 0. A nice line-kick by Brophy took Manawhenua to a good position, and form the line-outs the ball was passed through their forwards to Darragh. His pass in when tackled was taken by Wairarapa and given to Cooke, who went right through and scored. Cundy again added the major points. Wairarapa 10, Manawhenua 0. A loose rush by the visitors saw a melee in front of the posts, from which Parsons took the ball, and fell over the line. Brophy converted. Mahawhenua 5, Wairarapa 10. Immediately afterwards Payne got over, but the try was disallowed. Brophy then made a good opening, and the ball was kicked over the line, Wairarapa forcing. The home team came in turn, and Cooke attempted a field goal, but the ball went wide over the dead-line. Manawhenua were pressing hard, and the game increased in speed. The visiting forwards handled the ball, and Darragh came near to crossing, but a scrum was ordered, from which Manawhenua made a strenuous attempt to score, but without success. They were awarded a penalty kick outside half-way, Brophy failing to turn it to account. Wairarapa were kept busy stemming the forward rushes of their opponents until Persson gained possession from the ruck and got over near the posts. Brophy was successful with the kick. Manawhenua 10, Wairarapa 10. Within the next two minutes took the ball from the quarter-mark and went down the line to score in the corner. Cundy found the angle too great. Wairarapa 13, Manawhenua 10. At this stage Brophy retired injured, and was replaced by Dewe. Halftime arrived shortly afterwards. Wairarapa 13, Manawhenua 10. Upon resumption of play Manawhenua attacked, but Parker gained possession and passed to G. Booth, who kicked over the line. Offside play, however, spoiled the movement. With Manawhenua attacking, Hunt kicked down the line, and in the race for the ball J. Donald carried over. From the resultant scrum and line-out. Manawhenua kept the balk round the posts until Hunt saw his chance and crossed in the corner. Jacob converted. Manawhenua 15, Wairarapa 13. Sustaining their former dash, the visitors showed no*signs of tiring. Parata kicked from a scrum and McDonald followed up to hand to Hunt, who was baulked just short of the line. From the line-out Hiroti cleared. G. Booth here retired injured, being replaced by Williams. Following an unsuccessful attempt by the home team to cross in the corner, Cundy, Cooke, Stringfellow, and Williams handled in succession the last-named sending the ball over the line, but to no purpose. Reid gave the visitors another close call from a line-out, but Hunt effected a good save. Cundy missed with a penalty kick. Manawhenua at length changed the locality of the ball Jacob going down the line with the leather at his toes, but it went into touch. A fine try, placing the visitors further in the lead, resulted when McDonald picked up the ball on the quarter mark and ran down the line to score wide out. Jacob failed with the kick. Manawhenua 18, Wlairarapa 13. The visitors were pressing their advantage, although the Wairarapa forwards were now handling the ball more freely. Sitringfellow kicked over the line, and Manawhenua forced. Wairarapa then reduced the margin
between the scores. Cundy kicking
a penalty goal from near half-Avay. Wairarapa 16, Manawhenua 18. The visitors in turn were warded a penalty, Hunt’s kick passing outside the posts. Jacob also failed shortly. afterward. Wairarapa attacked willingly, but Williamson proved himself to be' reliable at full-back. Twice Wjairarapa were’compelled to force. J. Donald retired injured at this juncture, and was replaced by Q. Donald. The final whistle blew without any further alteration to the score. Manawhenua 18, Wairarapa 16. Mr. A. C. Kitto controlled the game.
