AN ELOPEMENT.
AND ITS FATAL SEQUEL. Sydney, August 3. At an inquest into the death of Sarah Wayne, 19 years of age, of Christchurch, New Zealand, whose body was found at the foot of the cliffs at Coogee, John Vernon Donnelly gave evidence that he eloped witli the girl from Christchurch, and came to Sydney, where they lived together. On July 18th he gave Che girl £l5O, which she put in a linen bag and hung round her neck. He left the flat where they were living, and when he returned, she was not there. On the following day he searched for the girl, but found no traces of her. He then sent a cable message to her mother, stating: “Sally missing. Expect suicide.” Deceased’s body was later found, but the money bag, when opened at the morgue, w/ts empty. The Coroner fotind that Sarah Wayne died from injuries received in falling over the cliffs at Coogee, but the evidence did not enable him do say whether or not she had wilfully cast herself over.
